Ontario Rebate Check

Are Heat Pumps Worth It in Ontario?

Rebates, cold-climate performance, and when switching makes financial sense in 2026.

Check Eligibility

With HRSP rebates up to $7,500 for non-gas homes (or $2,000 for Enbridge gas), heat pumps are worth a close look if you are planning a heating upgrade. That is especially true if you heat with oil, propane, or expensive electric baseboard.

When heat pumps make the most sense

  • Oil or propane heat: Highest savings potential plus OHPA federal stacking
  • Electric baseboard: Qualify for non-gas HRSP rates up to $7,500
  • Old gas furnace: Lower HRSP cap, but bundled insulation can improve payback
  • Planning AC replacement: A heat pump replaces both heating and cooling

Cold-climate concerns

Modern cold-climate air-source heat pumps work in Ontario winters when sized correctly. Your participating contractor should run a heat loss calculation. Undersized units struggle. Oversized units cost more upfront. Equipment must be on NRCan's qualified products list for HRSP.
