The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program helps oil-heated homeowners switch to heat pumps. Ontario oil homes can often combine OHPA with provincial HRSP non-gas heat pump rates — some of the highest total rebates available in 2026.
| Program | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HRSP air-source heat pump | Up to $7,500 | Provincial — non-gas rate for oil homes |
| OHPA standard stream | Up to $5,000 | Federal |
| OHPA enhanced (low-income) | Up to $10,000 | Federal — verify income limits at NRCan |
What changed from Greener Homes / HER+
Federal Greener Homes grants and Ontario HER+ closed in 2025. HRSP replaced provincial HER+ in January 2025. OHPA remains the main federal oil-to-heat-pump grant — confirm current status at Natural Resources Canada before you start.
Application order
- Confirm HRSP eligibility and hire a participating contractor.
- Verify OHPA eligibility separately at the federal portal.
- Complete heat pump installation per both programs' rules.
- Contractor submits HRSP; complete OHPA steps per NRCan instructions.
Do not assume one application covers both programs. Missing OHPA is a common reason oil homeowners leave federal money on the table.
